On August 29th we had to but our dog Cricket down! Last week while Josh and I were away celebrating our 19th Anniversary, we got a call from our neighbor that Cricket and bit a little 3 year old boy. We hurried home to see what went on,. and what we needed to do. Cricket has been our dog since she was 8 weeks old. She has always been loving and a great dog. So it just seemed weird that she would go after a little kid.
Through everything we heard, the mom was talking with one of our neighbors not paying attention to her son, until he started screaming. They dad some how got our number and sent us a picture. Although she didn't bit him full on she did nip and get above and below his eye. The dad was a jerk. Pulled the I am a lawyer card. Any way we got an electric fence and put it up that day. We also reassured him that she was caught up on her shots, how ever he did not trust that so he got animal control involved. When they came to the door I wanted to be rude but I knew it wasn't there fault. But the lady said that back in the end of June another lady said she was bitten by a black lab that had a pink clasp on her collar and that she shattered her thumb. So our dear Cricket was put on house arrest for 10 days. Just in case her shots didn't work as some vaccines don't. We had to be with her at all times outside, and she had to be on a leash. she had to be put away if people came over. She couldn't go for rides with us, she had to stay home, and inside if we were gone. She went 3 days with out peeing, and 4 with out pooping. Then she decide to do so in the house. Animal control stopped by for a surprise visit to make sure we were obeying the rules. Which we had. But on he 28th of August which was Lili's 13th Birthday animal control came to release her off house arrest, but wanted to take her with them to have the lady verify that it was cricket that bit her. They ended up taking her up to shelter and the lady didn't come to identify her. So on the 29th we called to see what was up.We had been tortured for 12 days with the decision on what to do with Cricket. If we did keep her it was going to be no life for her. Not the life she wanted. Freedom and to do what she wanted. To go out side when ever she wanted with out a leash and us. And she was getting old, what happens if she nips at some else, and really hurts them. She hates fences. And to prevent a law suit we decided to put her down. The hardest thing I have ever had to do.
Mary still cries about it. she misses her the most. they used to sleep together. Mary on her bed and Cricket on the trundle. So its been sad at our home this last week.
